In 1969, the Vilniusbranch separates from the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute to become the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute with the Chemistry Department as one of its constituents. Since 1974 the Department was headed by a famous chemist from the Instituteof Chemistryand Chemical Technology of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences Prof. Dr.Habil. Povilas Norkus. The research at the Department became directed mainly to chemical analysis and techniques of quantitative analysis of noble metals were being developed. In 1991, the Chemistry Department was incorporated into the Department of Building Materials headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Albinas Gailius. Since 1995, the Department was headed by Prof. Dr. Habil. Algimantas Kazragis. Development of new thermal insulating building materials and their study were the main research topics during this period. The Department of Building Materials was split to form the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering on February 15, 1996. The new Department was headed by Prof. Algimantas Kazragis. On June 1, 2001, the academician of the Lithuanian Academyof Sciences Prof. Dr. Habil. Juozas Kulys became the head of the Department.
